BACKGROUND & PERSONALITY Little to nothing is known about Yumichika’s origin. The only thing that is clear is that he used to live in Rukongai (the town of wandering spirits) – a part of the Soul Society to where human souls go when they die. He and his best friend, Ikkaku Madarame, were wandering around in the area – mostly spending their time fighting.

The change started one day when Ikkaku was defeated by another wanderer, almost losing his life during the fight. This stranger, Kenpachi Zaraki, told Ikkaku that he would let him live in order to be able to fight him again some day. Ikkaku took this as a challenge and when he heard that Kenpachi had become a shinigami captain, he decided to try becoming a soul reaper as well – to fight under Kenpachi’s command. Both Ikkaku and Yumichika managed to get into Seireitei (the court of souls) – an area held by the Shinigami – and both of them also managed to join Kenpachi’s squad, the eleventh division.

However, as Yumichika started to explore his abilities he realized that his Soul Slayer, Wysteria Peacock, was a kidou–type (aka; a sword which attacks are magic rather than combat based) which isn’t allowed in said squad. In other words he was in a situation where he could either admit that he was in the wrong division and use his power freely or stay where he was and hide these powers. Yumichika choose the latter – explaining this with the fact that he didn’t want his friends, Ikkaku and Kenpachi, to hate him.

Even if he is unable to release his true abilities; Yumichika is still a skilled fighter. In the division he is ranked fifth seat – refusing to be fourth since the kanji for “four” is much uglier than the kanji for “three”. But since Ikkaku is third seat he accepted to be fifth since “five almost looks like three”.

If called its name; Wysteria Peacock takes the form of a four bladed sickle – which is the form Yumichika uses it in as long as someone from his squad can see him. The next stage would be a bouquet of feathers that consumes the opponent’s spiritual powers.

As hinted earlier in the background; Yumichika is a narcissist who judges everything and everyone by their looks. He sees himself as tremendously beautiful and gets upset as soon as he comes close to something “ugly”. The moment a fight is won he instantly changes into clean clothes – no matter what’s going on around him and he gets fiercely mad if someone does anything that might make him look less pretty.

Despite all this – Yumichika is also a very loyal person who, in case it’s needed would stand his ground, fighting a stronger opponent in order to help a friend. When Ichigo and his group first arrived to Soul Society they were enemies; Ichigo defeated Ikkaku and one of his companions, Ganju, defeated Yumichika using a trick that in no way could be called either “beautiful” or “fair”. Still, in the same moment as Kenpachi decided to help Ichigo even Yumichika agrees to change side. During this fight he was facing the lieutenant of the ninth division, Shuuhei Hisagi, an opponent strong enough to out him in a situation were he needed to use kidou. He tells Hisagi to keep it a secret and therefore, has to trust in his morals being high enough not to tell on him.
